If you've noticed a bright green weed growing faster than the rest of your grass, you may be dealing with nutsedge. Often called "nutgrass", nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) is one of the most difficult lawn weeds to eliminate because it spreads through underground tubers called nutlets rather than traditional seeds.

Many homeowners are surprised when nutsedge returns year after year, even after pulling it by hand. That's because the underground nutlets can remain dormant for years before sprouting under favorable conditions. Warm temperatures, moist soil, and excess rainfall all encourage new growth, making nutsedge especially common during the summer months.

How to Get Rid of Nutsedge

Successfully controlling nutsedge requires patience and the right treatment strategy. Here are some important tips:

Don't Pull It by Hand

Although it may be tempting to pull nutsedge as soon as you see it, doing so can actually make the problem worse. Disturbing the plant may stimulate dormant nutlets underground, leading to additional growth over time.

Standard broadleaf weed treatments are often ineffective against nutsedge.
